Ferritin
Ferritin is the body’s iron storage protein and, inconveniently, an acute-phase reactant that rises with inflammation regardless of iron status. That dual identity is the entire problem with reading it on its own. Both ends of the range matter: deficiency brings fatigue and cognitive effects, while overload — hereditary haemochromatosis — damages liver, heart and pancreas through oxidative stress. Both are common, and both are quiet early on.
A well-established test for diagnosing iron-deficiency anaemia and for screening for hereditary haemochromatosis, particularly where there is a family history or unexplained abnormal liver enzymes. Interpretation always requires pairing with iron studies or transferrin saturation plus an inflammatory marker, because ferritin alone is confounded by concurrent inflammation.
